In an era where college programs try to get the jump on one another by committing

8th, 9th, and 10th graders, late blooming players are feeling the stress of being overlooked.

Think about it. If you’re a college coach tasked to recruit 13 and 14 year-olds, who are you going to go after?

You’re going to go after the big kid who is already shaving and looks like he came to the ballpark with his wife and kids.

But, we all seen it time and again. The 14 year-old man-child makes a verbal commitment.

His development plateaus, and just when he’s ready to sign his National Letter of Intent,

the university yanks it out from under him.

Meanwhile, the undersized teenager who enters puberty late gets overlooked.

My advice to all the late bloomers:

Keep working and wait for Mr. T. — testosterone, that is.

Become a world-class mover, keep your arm safe and healthy, build the fundamentals of athleticism,

and when Mr. T. shows up, you’ll surge ahead.

They’ll take the scholarship from the man-child and give it to you.

Camden Minacci was a scrawny 9th grader throwing 68 mph when he started.

Now he’s a 96 mph flame thrower in a power 5 conference.

Cody Martin was a late bloomer who was topping at 81 in the 11th grade.

He got up to 96 and was drafted by the Brewers.

                                 _________

Dylan Barrow was an undersized shortstop who never pitched until after he graduated from high school.

He won a D2 National Championship, touched 98 mph and got drafted by the Chicago White Sox.

                                _________

Reeves Martin was a 5’6 mid 80s righty in the 12th grade.

He developed into 96 mph closer at the University of New Orleans and got drafted by the Seattle Mariners.
