It Will Be Hard
Raise your hand if you want to be a major league baseball player.
Don’t be shy.
If you want it, say it.
I understand your reluctance.
For most people and most training facilities, if you tell them your dream, they’ll caution you to have a plan B.
They don’t want you to have false hope.
They want you to be “realistic.”
They’ll often refer you to what we call “The Pyramid of Hopelessness,” which highlights the long odds against you.
Frankly, we’re glad other organizations take that approach because the way we see it, someone has to make it to the big leagues. And, if someone has to make it, why can’t it be us?
Since we started training baseball players in 2008, we have helped over 300 students pitch at greater than 90 mph. Countless “ARMory Guys” have earned college scholarships, saving their families millions in tuition costs. And, if we count only the players who have logged at least eight training sessions with us, “ARMory Guys” have signed nearly $14 million in signing bonuses.
And here’s a nugget you probably didn’t expect. When those guys first started with us, there was nothing distinguishable about any of them. There was no identifiable trait that would have predicted their success. Anyone with enough drive and the right training plan can make it to the big leagues, because God doesn’t make junk, and human tissue doesn’t have a free will. If we get the training right, your body has to adapt. If we stretch it, the tissue must get longer. If we strengthen it, the muscle must get stronger. It cannot decide not to. The key is to get the training right, and we get it right a lot.
If you’re going to make it to the big leagues, you’ll need three things the ARMory Guys that made it all had in common:
First, they committed themselves to our mantra, “Relentless Pursuit.” That is the relentless pursuit of excellence … in everything they do. ARMory guys aren’t only trying to be excellent at baseball. From the time they wake up an make their bed, to the way they handle their chores around the house, to the way they associate with their friends and family, to their school work, and the way they prepare for and play baseball, “ARMory Guys” pursue excellence in everything. Excellence in baseball is a byproduct of their pursuit of excellence in life.
Next, they had a big enough “Why.”
Why do you want to be a big leaguer? I can tell you this, If it’s about fast cars, hot chicks, and lots of money — if it’s all about you, you will fail. What you are trying to do is possible. And I said before; anyone can do it.
The process will be complex, but we’ll make it simple. It will be simple but make no mistake; it will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done in your life.
I’m warning you right now. It is going to be hard.
It has to be hard.
As Eric Thomas, the hip-hop preacher says, “If it was easy, everyone would do it.”
If making it to the big leagues was easy, there would be 100 big-league teams, MLB players would make about $40,000 a year, and no one would go to the games.
Mark my words, and be prepared. It’s going to be hard.
And, that’s why you need a big “Why.”
Progress is never linear. There are going to be rough days. There are going to be some absolutely awful days. There are going to be days when you feel like you’ve worked your heart out, but you’ve been kicked right in the gut. You’ll feel like the game has pounded you into the dirt, and you’re lying there with your nose bloody and your mouth drooling. At this moment, if your “Why” is about you — if it’s about fast cars, hot chicks, and lots of money, you’ll surrender. You’ll take a C instead of an A. You’ll settle for less than the ARMory standard of excellence.
But, if you have a big enough “Why,” you’ll shake yourself, dust yourself off, wipe your nose, and you’ll GET BACK IN THE FIGHT!
So what’s your “Why?” How are you going to find it?
So what’s your “Why?” How are you going to find it?
Steven Covey said, “Begin with the end in mind.” That’s what I want you to do right now. Close your eyes and put yourself in the big leagues. Put yourself in the All-Star game and in the World Series. Fast forward all the way to the Hall of Fame. You’ve achieved all of your wildest dreams. You made it.
So what?
What are you going to do with it?
How are you going to use your achievements to make your world a better place?
Whatever the answer to that question is.
That’s your “Why.”
On the lowest of days, that is what will pull you out of the hole. That will be the reason you get back up.
That is why you will not give up.
You will not give in.
You will not quit.
Until. You. Win.
Yes, what you’re trying to do will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.
You’d better have a big enough “Why.”
And finally, you’ll need the third thing all successful “ARMory Guys” had in common. You’ll need a clear plan. And, that plan must be tailor-made just for you.
Commit yourself to the relentless pursuit of excellence.
Find your “Why.” We’ll take care of the rest. We’ll design an individualized plan that will cover every aspect of your training: your warmup, your throwing program, your mobility/movement plan, your strengthening and coordination, your recovery, and your nutrition. We’ll cover it all, and we’ll be right there to guide you every step of the way.
The process of achieving your dreams will be simple.
But it will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.
